Materials: Worsted weight yarn - about 3-4 oz

Needles: #6 US - 16" circular, same size double pointed needles, cable needle

Instructions:

This makes a child's size medium. To make a larger or smaller hat, knit a longer or shorter cabled band, and pick up more or fewer stitches. Another option is to vary the size of the needles used.

Abbreviations:
C6 = Slip 3 to cable needle and hold behind work, K3, K3 from cable needle
K = Knit
P = Purl

Make Band

Cast on 17 sts.

Row 1: Knit
Row 2: P14, K3
Row 3: K3, C6, C6, K2
Row 4: P14, K3
Row 5: Knit
Row 6: P14, K3

Repeat these 6 rows until band is 18" long. Bind off, and sew ends of band together.

Make Crown

The garter stitch edge of band will be the bottom of the hat. Pick up stitches along the opposite edge, starting at the seam. Pick up 3 stitches for every 4 rows of the band (about 92 sts). You must have a multiple of 4 sts.

Work circularly in K2 P2 ribbing for 5".
On the next round, *K2tog, P2 tog* , repeat to end of round (this will reduce the number of stitches by half).
Change to double pointed needles and work in K1 P1 ribbing for 3 rounds.
K2tog around.
Knit one round.
Break off yarn and pull end through remaining stitches. Pull to inside and secure. Weave in ends.
